Tough question! I’d say it’s been a long journey for me to realise what I ultimately wanted to do. The last straw was probably towards the end of my university, when I wrote a program on swarm intelligence (Siobhan should be able to tell you all about this ;)). That inspired me to leap from pure mathematics to something more applied.

When I started doing programming in school, I decided that i want to do computer science at the university. Then, when I saw my robot in my supervisor’s office (this was during my MSc) I knew I have to do robotics for my PhD and for my career.

I love cars and motorsport, so this question is easy for me.

I was watching the Formula One last race of the season in 1998 with Michael Schumacher Vs Mika Hakkinen. I thought it was amazing that you could have a job designing such incredible cars.

I decided there and then I was going to be an Engineer 😀

      Dear Jimbob123x,
I have thought about this for a long time, as my dad is an engineer and I watched a lot of science fiction when I was young.

However I didn’t decide officially to become and engineer until I was 21, I had originally decided to be a musician, but I changed my mind when I was 21 and applied for University.

I really wanted to be just like Samantha Carter from SG1, a science fiction series that is almost 20 years old now!

She was this really cool character who travelled the galaxy doing science and engineering and I wanted to be just like her.

      Siobhan
