• Question: What is the worst and most challenging part of your job?

      I can’t name the worst part, to be honest – I enjoy my job. What’s been the most challenging for me for the past year was trying to catch up with all the new developments in robotics, because there are so many new robots coming out these days!

      My job often means I have to work on a ship out at sea, we have been in some fairly big storms and I have felt sea sick. The horrible part about it is that you can’t escape it, unless you jump in the water but I’m not sure that would help.

      But I have found some sea sickness tablets that make it better.

      I work in sales, so often we are competing against other robot companies to sell our robots.

      We can work on projects that are worth up to £100,000,000! So sometimes it can take a over a year to create a design for a customer. Once we submit our quote we have to wait for the customer to pick who’s robots they want to buy.

      I find that bit the worst – waiting for a decision. It’s the best feeling in the world when you win, but it can be very disappointing if you don’t, especially when you’ve worked really hard.

      The most important thing if you don’t win, is to understand why and then move on to the next project better and stronger!

      I love what I do, so I can’t actually find something that I don’t like. I think the most challenging part for me is the fact that I have to keep up with all the project I get involved in and make sure I don’t mix them.

      Dear MatinTheMoose,
      I think the worst part is I still have to sit exams. I am 25 now, and I have been sitting exams every year since I was 13. So I’m looking forward to that finishing. I only have 3 left in May and that will be the end hopefully for a long time.

      The most challenging? I think this has to be learning how to do scientific research from an engineering perspective. I am used to building things and designing things, and I am now having to learn how to carry out experiments, prove things using maths, and write up scientific reports, whereas before I used to just build on my experience and my learning to decide what to do.

      It’s a very different style of working that I am used to but it is a lot of fun!
