I started in mathematics, which gave me very broad options to pursue after the university. It was just a step further from that and into computer science. Since I jumped straight into a PhD, I could choose the topic for my investigations and I chose robots.

It’s a fantastic time for robots in the UK right now, as universities, governments, private companies and individuals all contribute and support robotics.

I saw the robot in my supervisor’s office and I knew I want to do robotics. Since I started working with the robots, I’ve found so many ways to use them, and even developed an educational program.

      Dear JJMM,

My dad is an engineer, so I was always interested in designing and building things. We had a lot of lego growing up.

But I got into robotics because of films like wall-e, star wars etc…

I thought robots were the coolest things and I just wanted to be part of it.

I really wanted to build robot cars for most of my childhood, but since I got to university this has changed to swarm robots, because I can see a lot of potential to do good with it. Such as clean the environment, growing our food and finding people lost in a disaster situation.

Hope this helps 🙂 Any thing else please just ask.

It was a bit by accident! I’ve always loved cars & motorsport and always wanted to be a car designer.

However, as a designer I worked in an office all day, everyday. I have a very short attention span and got bored quickly! I started talking to people who worked in the factory making the cars and it sounded much more exciting.

I didn’t know much about robots at all when I started my job 3 years ago. That’s great to remember when I speak to new customers as they have all the same questions I did just a few years ago.

I have to work really closely with car designers as we have to design the car to make it easier for the robots to make. So I often find it’s really useful that I used to work as a designer
