Officially, work starts at 09:00 and ends around 17:00, but the timetable is very flexible for me. I might be on a training course from 10:00 till 12:00, or maybe writing up stuff.
Afternoons are spent with my participants, or robots, or both 🙂
Towards the evening, it’s usually some admin, like emails and news.

Sometimes there is less work, but sometimes you stay on or continue to think about new ideas at home over the evening tea. I have to visit some people after the working hours too, because that what suits them best with their timetables.

      Dear Heidi,
For me every day is very different.

The only thing that is certain is that I have 3 hours of class on Mondays and on Thursdays.

Outside of class, I try and study what has been done by other robot engineers in order to learn from them. I also have to try things out for myself in order to learn what works and what doesn’t.

I mostly work with simulation, which is a little like playing a computer game where you tell your robots what to do and see what happens.

I also volunteer as much as I can, so this will vary from week to week.

Right now I’m helping to organise a European conference on robots so there are meetings and tasks to do with that, like emailing people and researching costs etc…

I also meet with my supervisor, who is sort of like a teacher who helps me with my work and guides me a lot. Our meetings usually last a couple of hours because we just end up chatting about cool things.

Any thing else you would like to know please just ask 🙂

      Siobhan

I usually try to start my day as early as possible, and get to the lab before anyone else. So my day starts around 6-7am. And most of the times I end up staying in the office until 7-8pm or even later when I have deadlines.

During the day, I have teaching, demonstrations, or I have to visit schools sometimes. I also volunteer for an engineering institute (called the IEEE) and I actually have about five roles with them. Usually my days are really really busy. But I cannot complain. 🙂

I get to work about 8am every morning. Some people start as early as 6.30am but I’m not a morning person!

Normally I will have at least one visit to a customer planned into my day. Most are quite nearby, so only an hour or so drive.

If I visit a customer in the morning, I will try to get back by lunchtime where I will probably have 2 or 3 meetings in the afternoon. In the meetings I’ll be looking at different projects we have with customers and working out which robots to use.

I normally finish by 6pm, but sometimes if we have a deadline I might have to work until midnight! On a Wednesday I have Italian lessons, so I can understand my colleagues in our Italy office better (their English is much better than my Italian!).

Sometimes if a customer if far away or abroad I stay in a hotel for the night.

I like to start early so I am usually before 8:00 and then I just make a tea or coffee, seat in front of my computer and start coding/designing/testing (depending what stage of the project is). I stay very focused at mornings. Then I go for a lunch with my mates around 12:00. I have cool people in the company so I enjoy lunch time a lot. Then after lunch I would usually catch up with my project team to discuss how the things are going and make some priorities for a next few days. There are project meetings as well so I would spend around 1 hour few days a week on a project meeting. If everything goes with the plan I leave 16:30.
