The first sort of robot that was build is called an Automaton and it was created in the late 18th century, by a Swiss watchmaker. The robot is more operated by a mechanism similar to that of a watch, than to what we see now in robots.

The Automaton was able to perform a set of limited predefined tasks. For example, the maker of the robot created three of them, one of with was a writer. Ant the robot still works up to this day.

Of course, if you compare today’s robots with the Automaton, it might seem that it does not do that many things, but back then this was state-of-the-art technology.

I think Iulia already gave a very good answer on the very first kind of robot, so I’ll answer a slightly different point on the first industrial robots (i.e. robots that were used to make things).

I use robots to build cars, so these are called industrial robots. The first industrial robot was made out of Mechano in 1937, so actually not all that long ago – perhaps even in your grandparents lifetime. This robot was used to stack wooden blocks in set patterns.

The first industrial robot that was available to buy, wasn’t until 1956!

It’s amazing to think how far we’ve come in just 60 years.
