I remember being in a Chess Tournament when I was 10 or so…

I haven’t participated in Robot Wars or anything like that – just not my field 🙂

However, as an aspiring academic, you are constantly in competition with pretty much everyone else on Earth to earn a place as a conference presenter, or to publish something in a journal.

Oh, and never mind PhD-specific stuff, like the “3-minute thesis” competition, which you can check out here: https://vimeo.com/threeminutethesis/videos 🙂

Hi Supreme Fire! I’ve not been to any tournaments in my current job, but I’ve been involved in a few competitions with my STEM work and in previous jobs.

I used to work in F1 as a car designer, so every race weekend was a bit like a big competition. It was very exciting to watch the races hope your team would win. When I was at Mercedes we won a couple of races, so the whole team got a glass of champagne at Monday lunchtime 🙂

Now I volunteer with a local school, supporting their after school robotics club. The school has several teams in the VEX robotics championships. In fact they were competing at the national finals at the Big Bang Fair at the NEC today.

It’s a great tournament – if you think it’s something your school might be interested in you can read a bit more about it here: http://www.vexrobotics.com/competition/
