Industrial Robot programmer – Swedish Waterjet Lab
Control System Engineer
Hi, my name in Mateusz and I am an Engineer from Poland.
I come from a beautiful city – Gdansk where I finished my Bachelor in Automatic Control and Robotics.
Currently I live in Crawley West Sussex where I work as a Control/Software Engineer. I have lived here for about 2 years and I love this place for many reasons!
I lived as well in Sweden where I enjoyed international student life (and I did my master program in Electrical Engineering at the same time – result you can see here: https://youtu.be/HuZLEZgoXKo?list=FLVv87K6cvTmHpDcJxSCVjmg). Moreover I can speak decent Swedish thanks to that and I never use it – not even in Sweden too much as they speak perfect English usually (make better choices if you want to learn a new language. Pick something more popular ! 😀 )
My biggest hobby at the moment is traveling, adventuring and hiking. I love to go wild camping and do spontaneous expeditions to unknown places. ( I spent a month backpacking in Australia this December/January, you are welcome to check it out https://youtu.be/8z9N_lN49-k ).
When I’m stuck at home I usually play a guitar, watch movies/youtube or even read some books.
Control System Engineer – I make the things moving !
I work as a Control System Engineer for Oil and Gas industry. In general I design control and safety systems for offshore platforms or onshore gas plants and refineries. It involves activities like programming (control software), electrical design, process visualization development, going to the costumer site all around UK and further for system commissioning and testing.
In simpler words, I make the things moving 😉
My Typical Day: Each day at my work is different depending on the stage of the project. That’s why my job is not boring !
In my company we usually do a big projects that take about a year to deliver. Therefore my daily activities depend on what stage of the project is. And sometimes I am not even in the office ! For example last year I spent around 3 moths on Gas Terminal in Bacton to test and commission a control system for a whole plant ! That is why my job is not boring, it doesn’t have a typical day 🙂
However I would probably be doing some of the following during the day: designing control system and then programming PLC controllers, developing scripts in VBA, writing technical documentation, contacting client, building visualization, testing control system, wiring up and playing with a test rig, having team project meetings, going to the client sites to do commissioning.
What I'd do with the money
I would buy few LEGO Mindstorms kits.
I would like to buy LEGO mind-storms sets to organize robotic workshops for kids.
When I was a student I used to be a “Robotic Teacher”, where I was using LEGO mind-storms to organize workshops where kids were competing in robot fight, races, line followers and many more.
I think it is a good way to engage kids and show some basics of how computer/controller works, how to program the robot, how to think about algorithms, how the sensor works. Moreover I know that in many cases it ignites a real passion for creating!
I would have a lot of fun doing it again here.

Tell us a joke.
A programmer is going to the grocery store and his wife tells him, “Buy a gallon of milk, and if there are eggs, buy a dozen.” So the programmer goes, buys everything, and drives back to his house. Upon arrival, his wife angrily asks him, “Why did you get 13 gallons of milk?” The programmer says, “There were eggs!”
